Early Days
Nick Luxton and Brook take pride in constructing the ring at Barum Boxing.
After a collective effort to clear and clean our premises, the next step was to construct a ring within our space.
Nick Luxton and Brook Hawkins spearheaded the project, building it entirely from scratch to perfectly fit our allocated space.
Bag Framework
Hanging Around
To maximize our floor space for technical training, we devised a solution to suspend our bags from the roof using a scaffold sub frame.
Advanced Scaffolding generously donated the scaffold and spreader beams, while Coach Kevin Taylor, his son Jack, and volunteers from Advanced Scaffolding assembled it. With this setup in place, we were fully equipped to hang the bags and elevate our training sessions.
Motivated and Fit
Keeping our boxers going
Amidst these developments, our boxers continued their training regimen. Simon Haywood, our dedicated running coach, ensured our boxers stayed on track with outdoor training sessions.
These sessions not only maintained their motivation but also kept their enthusiasm high.
Flooring
Floor Levelling
To address the uneven and hazardous flooring in our premises, we initiated a fundraising campaign to finance screeding. Thanks to the generous support of Fullabrook plc, we successfully raised the necessary funds.
A call to my friend Stitch from South West Screeding Ltd resulted in a fantastic price for the job. With the assistance of Stitch and his team, who happen to be my mates, we achieved a superb outcome – a perfectly level floor!"
Matting
After addressing the flooring, our next step was to install matting for both aesthetic appeal and comfort. Following careful measurement and research, we sourced the ideal flooring from Martial Arts Matting.
Opting for 40mm thick mats for enhanced durability, we proceeded with the installation process. This provided a dedicated MMA area, as depicted by Lee Bishop's red section, enabling him to conduct his sessions seamlessly."

Hosting successful sparring days and Western Counties Squad training sessions at our gym, equipped with three rings, is just the beginning.
